Nylon Fiber

Nylon absorbs water:
Nytech® EG and Nytech® CG are both Fully Drawn nylon monofilament fibers.  Nylon fibers are hydrophilic, meaning they absorb water.  Although the amount is minimal, 4 - 4.5% by weight, it does provide for the additional hydration of the cement particles immediately surrounding the fibers.  This "additional hydration" allows the concrete to continue to cure, which promotes a stronger bond with the fiber and ultimately tougher concrete.

Undeniable Results:
Research reports show that the nylon fibers significantly reduce volume change when compared to monofilament polypropylene, which is hydrophobic.

This improved bond between Nytech® Nylon Fibers and the mortar can also be confirmed in the rebar pullout tests.  Here we see the Nylon fibers transferring the stress created at the interface of the concrete and deformed rebar out into the concrete beyond the tips of the rebar ribs.  Plain concrete would fail at the tips of the rebar ribs.  This transfer of stress is a factor of the dosage rate.

Nytech EG:

Nytech® EG is a nylon multifilament fiber promoted as secondary/temperature-shrinkage reinforcement. The standard dosage rate of 1.0 lb/yd3 has approximately 34 million ¾” long, 6 denier fibers. This quantity of fibers is important to the success of the product. With 34 million fibers per cubic yard of concrete, critical fiber spacing is reduced thus providing a greater potential for arresting crack growth at the point of inception.

Nytech® EG meets the requirements of ASTM C1116, Section 4.1.3 and Note 3 as well as ICC ES AC32, Sections 3.1.1 and 3.1.2.

Nytech® EG performs well in all of the tests that quantify durability/soundness.  For example, the impact tests show that the shards of the failed concrete are held together well beyond first crack.  The 3-dimensional distribution of the stress produces increased fatigue strength and a reduction in the concrete permeability.  The increase in fatigue strength can be translated into increased life expectancy of the concrete when used in applications exposed to multiple axle loadings.

Nytech  CG:

Nytech® CG is a nylon monofilament fiber that can be used as secondary/temperature-shrinkage reinforcement at 1.0 lb/yd3. With Nytech® CG there are approximately 17.4 million ¾” long fibers in the 1.0 pound dose.

Nytech® CG meets the requirement of ASTM C1116, Section 4.1.3 and Note 3 as well as the requirements of ICC ES AC32, Sections 3.1.1 and 3.1.2.

The fact that nylon is hydrophilic helps in providing the outstanding benefits contributed by the Nytech® CG. Nytech® CG is the everyday product stocked by the ready mix producer for every day use as secondary reinforcement in most residential and commercial slabs-on-ground and light industrial applications.

There is never an issue about the distribution of Nytech® CG in the mix and Nytech® CG always provides a non-hairy surface. With nylon absorbing water we also find there is color absorption, thus Nytech® CG is a must with decorative/colored concrete.
